Anyone who crosses the Wabash Memorial Bridge in Mt. Vernon knows that they removed the manned toll booth a couple of years ago. At the time they explained how you need to open an account with INDOT to get an electronic transponder to put on your windshield that takes the toll out of your 'account' electronically at the time you cross in either direction. My sense is, some people did it and most did not. Well, as of today anyway, INDOT is now stopping people going over the bridge to inform them that they must have the transponder to cross the bridge at all times. They are even handing you an instruction sheet that explains how to open an account.

If you cross the bridge and do not have a transponder, your vehicle and license plate is photographed and you will receive a bill in the mail for the number of times you have crossed without paying and you could be subject to other fines as well.

Each account must have a minimum balance of $25 when opened and must be maintained accordingly. You must have this account regardless of how often or how seldom you use the bridge.  There are three ways to open an account if you plan to do so.

  1. Online at www.wabashbridge.com
  2. By phone at 1-800-279-5758
  3. In person at the Toll Bridge office or the Vincennes office of INDOT
