Winter Storm Warning on Christmas Day in Southern Indiana & Western Kentucky – 5″ Possible!

A low pressure system is forecast to develop over the southern Plains, and then track northeast across Tennessee on Christmas night. Strong winds and heavy snow to the north and west of the low track will likely impact southeast Missouri, southern
Illinois, and portions of southwest Indiana Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Current indications are that the axis of heaviest snowfall will be over southeast Missouri and southern illinois. However, after a period of rain Tuesday evening, the rain should change over to snow in the late night hours and become heavy at times. Snow will likely continue into Wednesday morning as well with a total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches possible before the snow tapers to flurries during the day. In addition to the snow, blustery north winds may gust over 30 mph during and following the snow.

It should be noted that any minor change in the forecast track of the storm would cause the heavy snow area to shift so continue to monitor updated forecasts.

Intense snowfall rates and strong winds may cause very difficult travel conditions. Visibility will be lower than one half mile with local whiteout conditions possible.

Blowing and drifting snow could potentially make travel impossible as winds gust over 30 mph at times. A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant. Snow, sleet or ice accumulations that would greatly impact travel.
