In Lower Manhattan, near the spot where the Twin Towers once stood, the reading of the names of those who died on September 11, 2001, began early Thursday morning.

Family members of the nearly 3,000 victims will read sections of the full list of names, with these pauses:

  • 8:46 a.m.: Citywide moment of silence, in observance of the first plane striking the North Tower; families of victims of 2001 and 1993 attacks will begin reading the names
  • 9:03 a.m.: Moment of silence in observance of the second plane striking the South Tower
  • 9:37 a.m.: Moment of silence in observance of Flight 77 striking the Pentagon
  • 9:59 a.m.: Moment of silence in observance of the South Tower falling
  • 10:03 a.m.: Moment of silence in observance of Flight 93 crashing near Shanksville, Pennsylvania
  • 10:28 a.m.: Moment of silence in observance of the North Tower falling

There are various other events around New York today to honor those who died that day as well.

In Washington President Obama and Vice President Biden, along with the first and second ladies, held a moment of silence on the south lawn of the White House. They then proceeded to the Pentagon, where they will attend a memorial event.
