If you plan on going out this weekend to booze it up social-style with your friends, you will definitely want to consider using a designated driver or a taxi (see bottom of post for taxi contact info).

While having a designated driver is always the best option, Indiana State Police say that this weekend would not be a good time to test your luck. Because as part of a six-state weekend DUI crackdown project, troopers will be out in full force using sobriety checkpoints and high visibility saturation patrols to bust those people driving under the influence of alcohol.

Yes, sobriety checkpoints are legal in the State of Indiana.

The Indiana Supreme Court ruled that sobriety checkpoints do not violate Indiana’s Constitution when implemented pursuant to a properly approved, minimally intrusive, neutral plan with standardized instructions and explicit guidance for officers to protect against inconsistent enforcement and a narrow objective.

Even if you are not stopped by a sobriety checkpoint this weekend, chances are you will be the target of a saturation patrol. These patrols consist of a concentrated effort to meticulously observe moving violations such as reckless driving, speeding, aggressive driving, missing taillights, and missing license plate lights – Yes, I said missing license plate lights!

Regardless if you are stopped at a sobriety checkpoint or pulled over for speeding, if a trooper asks you to submit to a Breathalyzer test, failure to comply will result in an immediate DUI and the suspension of your license for up to one year.

The current legal blood alcohol limit in the State of Indiana is .08 percent. So, it doesn’t take much to get you into trouble.
