Safety measures with children's car seats seem to be constantly evolving. By the time a second or third child enters your life, the car seat from the first one is likely no longer up to snuff. To make sure you not only have the proper seat, but have it properly installed, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department will host a child seat inspection clinic this Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Washington Square Mall on Evansville's east side.

It's been some time since I had to worry about locking a car seat into my truck, but I'll always remember the struggle of feeding the seat belt through the holes in the back, then trying to pull it tight enough the seat wouldn't sway one way or the other every time I made a turn. I went as far as climbing into the backseat and pushing down on the seat with my knee (before my child got in it, of course) while tugging on the seat belt with all my might.

I probably (OK, likely) went a bit too far to make sure the seat was secure, but that's why Thursday's free inspection is so helpful. If you have any concern that you don't have your child's seats properly installed, or your pretty sure you do, but figure it doesn't hurt to double-check, swing through the parking lot and let one of the members of the Sheriff's Office have a look.

Deputies are also inviting kids to bring their bikes and take a ride on the bicycle safety course they'll have set up during the event. Each kid who participates in the course will receive a free bicycle helmet courtesy of Deaconess Health System.
