Samstrong.org – Sam Featherstone of Newburgh Hosts Benefit for Pediatric Brain Cancer

Every February here at WKDQ, we ask our listeners to become Partners in Hope with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Some of our listeners give because they understand the heartache parents feel, some are just good people and then there are those who have known a child who has suffered from cancer. For them, giving to a place like St. Jude is a personal experience. No parent should have to watch their child suffer. No family should ever have to say goodbye to a person who has just begun experiencing life. No child should feel the hurt and fear that cancer evokes.

Let me introduce you to Sam Featherstone. Sam is a 19-year-old college freshman from Newburgh has been battling brain cancer for over three years.
“Sam has had multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and three brain surgeries. Despite all of these efforts, the cancer has persisted. A recent MRI at St. Jude showed the cancer has aggressively returned and there are currently no more treatment options. Sam is now on hospice care at home.
Sam was attending IUPUI on a full scholarship and had aspirations to become a pediatric oncologist, having received provisional admittance to the Indiana University School of Medicine class of 2016. Sam wanted to become a pediatric oncologist so that he could help children with brain tumors but now that is unlikely to happen. Still Sam wants to help find a cure for childhood brain cancer and therefore has organized “SamStrong: Search for the Cure” to raise awareness of pediatric brain tumors and to raise money for research.” -samstrong.org
What personally strikes me about Sam is that he has taken a hopeless situation and turned it into good. He wants to make sure other kids don’t have to go through what he has gone through.
Sam is hosting a benefit to raise money to fund pediatric brain cancer research. Purchase your tickets for ”SamStrong: Search for the Cure” at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“SamStrong: Search for the Cure” will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Church in Newburgh, Indiana.
The SamStrong Benefit will include pizza and refreshments, games, silent and live auctions and special guests. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here.

Major National Anthem Flub Before Hockey Game
The national Anthem is one of the toughest songs to sing that there is. There have been some great versions and some really bad versions over the years - Rosanne - just sayin'. We had some great versions at the Ford Center during the recent Icemen season and just the other night, a little boy did a killer version of the anthem before the Otters game at Bosse Field that was awesome... but sometimes.
How Do You Pronounce GIF? The Creator Says We’re All Wrong Because It’s Pronounced ‘JIF’
There are hundreds and thousands of formats in today's computer world, but the GIF format stands alone and was even named the "word of the year" in 2012. GIF stands for 'Graphic Interchange Format'...whatever the heck that means, but it has changed computer animation as we know it. It has always been pronounced with a hard "g", like gift and apparently, that is absolutely WRONG...who knew?
