Miranda Lambert's contribution to Restoration, one of a pair of albums paying tribute to Elton John's musical legacy, is a stripped-down rendition of "My Father's Gun." Readers can press play above to listen to Lambert's rendition of the track.

A lifelong John fan, Lambert recently told the Tennesseean that she had rediscovered "My Father's Gun," along with the rest of its album, Tumbleweed Connection, as an adult, while going through a difficult time in her life.

"I re-listened to it a couple years ago," the country star recalls. "Sometimes you hear things differently. And I had gone through some things in my life. It's almost like I re-discovered it, and it impacted me totally differently as an adult who had been through some things. It's crazy how music can touch you over and over again."

Originally released in 1970, the song tells the story of a Confederate soldier whose father dies in battle. After burying him, the young man takes his father's gun and rejoins the battle, inheriting not only a weapon but also the causes, values and burdens his father once bore.

Lambert joins a slew of iconic country artists, including Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and many more, in honoring John on the all-country Restoration album. Bernie Taupin, John's long-time songwriting partner and friend, curated the album.  Restoration and its companion album, Revamp were released on April 6. Additionally, John plans to kick off his 300-date, 3-year-long Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which will cap off his 50-year career, this September.
