July 1st is going to be a very busy day for the state of Indiana because more than 230 new laws will take effect that were passed by the 2011 session of the Indiana General Assembly. They range from texting and driving to handgun reform. Teens have been prohibited under the law from texting and driving for quite some time now, but on July 1 SB 1129 will go into effect that will prohibit sending or reading text messages for all drivers. The Indiana State Police thinks the law will cut down the number of texting related crashes, but it will take some time to enforce because the violation will be difficult for Law Enforcement to detect. We are all familiar with the law that requires anyone purchasing alcohol to show ID regardless of age. As of July 1 store clerks will be required to ask for ID from only those purchasers who appear to be under 40 years of age. If you have nothing better to do tonight, you can read all of the new laws at http://in.gov/legislative/. Enjoy.
