Texas country star Josh Abbott is just one of the many celebrities who supports the efforts of St. Jude Children's Hospital, and he says the treatment and research facility is unlike any other.

"That place is just incredible," he tells Lonestar 99.5 FM in Lubbock, Texas. "I think my takeaway is just how positive it is. I've been to a lot of hospitals, and I've visited other children's hospitals, and there's just all sorts of ways that they've discovered that they can help these kids heal aside from medicine. It's all about the environment and attitude."

He points to the open architecture, large rooms and plenty of natural sunlight as unique features, as well as the fact that the doctors and staff all eat in the same place with the patients and their families.

"It creates a community — everybody learning each other's names, everybody visits with each other. It's truly remarkable," he says. "They're not only treating kids, they're trying to discover new ways to cure them."

That important work is funded largely through individual donations. This March 5-6 Taste of Country has partnered with 16 Townsquare Media-owned stations for a radiothon to raise money to continue to realize the vision of founder Danny Thomas — that "No child should have to die in the dawn of life."

"They get a lot of research done, they treat the families and kids great, and they never make them pay for one thing," Abbott adds. "The whole concept makes you believe in the good in people again."
