Drivers across Indiana that are forced to show proof of insurance to a law enforcement officer as the result of an accident or traffic violation will now be allowed to do that electronically.

A new law that goes into effect on July 1 will make Indiana one of 24 states that now allow motorists to show electronic proof of insurance coverage. Electronic images of the driver’s insurance card can be accessed through an app downloaded from a number of insurance providers.

Many officers are excited about this new law because they say it will ultimately benefit both police officers and motorists by allowing technology to provide them with up-to-date insurance information when it is needed.

Obvious benefits to drivers are the ability to keep up with expiration dates and assist them with producing a valid insurance card when there isn’t one available in the car – all of which could prevent a motorist from getting a ticket.
