While it is not unusual to read a news story about a Hoosier on his lawnmower, usually drunk and riding shirtless to the liquor store, the tale of a man driving his tractor to raise money for sick kids seems a little more reasonable.

Darren Hayes is currently driving his antique John Deere tractor on a twelve hundred mile journey from Florida to northern Michigan in an attempt to raise $25,000 for Riley’s Children’s Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House.

Hayes says he is doing this in honor of a close friend who lost his daughter to brain cancer. He adds that now, that friend is battling cancer, which moved him to do something to help.

Before finishing his trip next week in New Buffalo, Michigan, Hayes plans to make a stop at the Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health to do an acoustic performance for the children there.
