If you’re going to play on the water in Indiana, you had better stay dry.

As part of a national campaign to raise awareness of the dangers surrounding boating under the influence of drugs and alcohol, Indiana conservation officers will be beefing up patrols across Indiana waterways this summer.

Operation Dry Water, which is a national law enforcement program created by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, is set to get underway June 28-30, and is aimed at controlling the number of boaters out there riding drunk and high on Hoosier waters.

Statistics from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources indicate that boating under the influence is responsible for alarming number of deaths. In 2011, nearly 8 percent of all boating accidents were found to be alcohol related, as well as 17 percent of boating fatalities.

Law enforcement officials say that the blood alcohol limit for boaters is no different than people who operate motor vehicles – 0.08.
