The scam involves callers impersonating utility company employees looking to collect on past due utility bills that don’t exist.

Indiana Attorney General, Greg Zoeller’s office released a statement saying his office, along with Indiana utility companies have received calls from customers reporting the scam which involves an unknown caller claiming to be with their local utility company. The caller will inform the customer they have a past due bill which needs to be paid, however the only way to make good on the account is to purchase a prepaid debit card a department or convenience store, and call back with the PIN number to give the scammers access to the cash.

In order to fool the public into thinking they are getting a legitimate call from the utility company, the scammers will use spoofing technology to disguise their phone number and make it appear as if the call is coming from the utility company itself.

The Attorney General notes that customers will overdue bills are usually given notice through written statements mailed directly from the utility company, and that if you receive such a call, you should simply hang up and contact the utility company directly to make sure your account is in good standing.

If you’ve been the victim of this scam, you’re encouraged to fill out a consumer complaint with the Attorney General’s office by visiting IndianaConsumer.com or by calling 1-800-380-5516.
