How Many ‘Tailgate In The Moonlight’ Songs Are There In Country Music?
By now you've heard Zac Brown's comments about the state of country music, and his statements that Luke Bryan's 'That's My Kind Of Night' is one of the worst songs he's ever heard. Zac also said that if he were to hear one more 'Tailgate in the moonlight, daisy dukes song' he would 'throw up.' Well, I thought it would be fair to look through the WKDQ library and see just how many of those songs we play.
I searched the last two years of music we've played to find songs that mention these themes. I found songs that mention trucks and cutoff jeans specifically. Some songs got eliminated because of the theme, like Lee Brice and 'I Drive Your Truck' and Tyler Farr's 'Redneck Crazy.' Those are obviously not the type of song Zac Brown was referring to, but I singled out songs that mentioned any of the following criteria:
1) A truck
2) A tailgate of a truck
3) A girl sitting next to a guy in a truck
4) A girl wearing cutoff jeans (with or without a truck)
That being said, here is the comprehensive list of songs that we've played in rotation over the last two years that fit that mold:
Kip Moore "Something Bout A Truck"
Keith Urban "You Gonna Fly"
Montgomery Gentry "Where I Come From"
Chris Cagle "Got My Country On"
Rascal Flatts "Banjo"
Craig Morgan "This Ole Boy"
Luke Bryan "Drunk On You"
Toby Keith "Beers Ago"
Dierks Bentley "5-1-5-0"
Lauren Alaina "Georgia Peaches"
Love And Theft "Angel Eyes"
LoCash Cowboys "C-O-U-N-T-R-Y"
Randy Houser "How Country Feels"
Tim McGraw "Truck Yeah"
Jason Aldean "Take A Little Ride"
Brantley GIlbert "Kick It In The Sticks"
Greg Bates "Did It For The Girl"
Florida Georgia Line "Cruise"
Jason Aldean "1994"
Florida Georgia Line "Get Your Shine On"
LoCash Cowboys "Chase A Little Love"
Greg Bates "Fill In The Blank"
Randy Houser "Runnin' Out Of Moonlight"
Blake Shelton "Boys Round Here"
Lee Brice "Parking Lot Party"
Tim McGraw "Southern Girl"
Florida Georgia Line "Round Here"
Luke Bryan "That's My Kind Of Night"
Colt Ford and Jason Aldean "Drivin' Around Song"
Jason Aldean "Night Train"
As you can see, there are many repeat offenders, but they ARE some of the most successful artists in country music. I mean look at that list. I'm sure some of your favorites are on there. Or maybe you feel like Zac Brown, and think we need a change. Either way, this is the state of country music and as always, it will change again.
