Forbes Magazine Says Indiana Billionaires Getting Richer

There are four billionaires living in Indiana, and they are all getting substantially wealthier, according to recent statistics from Forbes magazine.

Earlier today, the infamous business and economics publication released its 28th annual world’s richest people list, with a record-breaking 1,645 billionaires making this year’s rankings – four of which reside right here in the Hoosier state.

Gayle Cook, the 80-year-old widow of the late William “Bill” Cook and owner of the Cook Group, a company established by her husband in 1963 is the wealthiest billionaire in Indiana. After Bill died in 2011, she inherited his position on the company’s board as well as his stock. She ranks 240 on the Forbes list of U.S. billionaires and has a net worth of $5.8 billion, which is up $6 million from last year.

Also making the list is 79-year-old Herbert Simon, who in addition to being the owner of the Indiana Pacers is the cofounder of Simon Property Group. Simon ranks 868 on this year’s list with a worth of $2.05 billion – up from $1.95 billion in 2013.

Dean White, a 90-year-old Indianapolis real estate developer and former owner of Whiteco Industries, ranked in on this year’s list with $2 billion, a million dollar jump from his position last year.

Indianapolis Colts owner 54-year-old Jim Irsay ranked 1092 on this year’s list with a worth of $1.62 billion — $2 million more than he was valued at last year. Sources say this could be Irsay’s last year on the billionaire’s list, as a recent divorce to his wife Meg could take its toll.

Although he’s not from Indiana, it should come as no surprise that Bill Gates topped the list again this year – his 15th victory in the past 20 years – with a net worth of $76 billion, which is up from $67 billion in 2013.
