Feliz Cinco De Mayo! Let’s Do The Mexican Hat Dance [Video]
Today is Cinco de Mayo and there will be hundreds of Americanized celebrations across the land even though most probably don’t even know what is being celebrated. It is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride in the U.S., but it is not and has nothing to do with Mexican Independence Day. The day marks one of the most unlikely victories for the Mexican army and it took place in the state of Puebla.
It was General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin that led his army into battle against the French and defeated the French Army on May 5, 1862 in what became known as the Battle of Puebla. France occupied Mexico after the Mexican-American war of 1846-1848, the Mexican Civil War of 1858 and the reform wars of 1860. The French began their withdrawl from Mexico after the Battle of Puebla.
Many believe that Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican Independence Day, which it does not. Mexico’s most patriotic holiday occurs on September 16th.
