GOBBLER GATHERING

By September each and every year, Evansville Rescue Mission’s staff begins to make preparations for what has become their annual signature event.  This event is their Thanksgiving food basket giveaway for Tri-State families called the Gobbler Gathering.

For more than 90 years, the Rescue Mission has partnered with the community to ensure local families have enough food to eat with their loved ones during Thanksgiving.

As a frame of reference, here are a few examples of the impact the Gobbler Gathering made in our community this past year:

  • 1,931 Tri-State families received a Thanksgiving food basket for free that included a frozen turkey, produce and a variety of dried/canned goods
  • Of this total, more than 400 folks living in neighboring apartment communities welcomed a donated sack of the same items food basket recipients took home
  • Nearly 800 community volunteers sacrificed their time to help fill food baskets and to accompany families through our Gobbler Gathering food tent.

More than 200 local schools, churches, businesses, civic clubs and families either collected food (more than 60,000 items were donated) or made a monetary donation toward purchasing food
