'Strawberry Wine' hitmaker Deana Carter has filed for legal separation from husband Brandon Malone, TMZ reports.

According to documents Carter filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the singer cites "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. However, in the documents, Carter also claims she first separated from Malone in 2011. The couple was married in October of 2009. The country singer is asking that the court make Malone pay her attorney fees, as well as spousal support.

Carter's debut single from 1996, 'Strawberry Wine,' reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, while her debut album, 'Did I Shave My Legs for This,' sold over 5 million copies. Her second album, 'Everything's Gonna Be Alright,' sold over 500,000 copies.

She later released albums on Rounder Records, Arista Nashville, Vanguard Records and Adamant Records. Carter co-wrote 'You and Tequila,' Kenny Chesney's 2011 hit featuring Grace Potter, with fellow songwriter Matraca Berg. The song was previously included on Carter's 2003 album, 'I'm Just a Girl.'
