Dan + Shay brought their sweeping hit single "Tequila" to the 2018 CMA Awards. The duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney performed the song on Wednesday night (Nov. 14), during the annual awards ceremony, in Nashville.

Mooney was on piano and Smyers played the guitar. The duo showed off their impeccable harmonies, but the best part was at the end, when Mooney's vocals truly soar. He hit note after note, and his piano erupted into flames and lit up the stage. The song's last note was perfectly on pitch--and it was so long, it may have left the audience breathless.

The debut single from Dan + Shay's self-titled third album, "Tequila" hit No. 1 and has been certified platinum. Smyers co-wrote the song with Nicolle Galyon and Jordan Reynolds.

"We thought there was something really special about having just the piano and vocals, and when we went to cut the track, we wanted to preserve the integrity of why people had fallen in love with the demo in the first place," Smyers shares. "The track builds up by the end of the song, but I think just having the piano and Shay singing at the beginning really makes people want to stop and listen."

The bittersweet "Tequila" earned Dan + Shay nominations for Single of the Year, Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year at the 2018 CMA Awards. Dan + Shay are also in the running for Vocal Duo of the Year -- and the duo admits that hearing their names announced that many times among the nominees caught them off guard.

"We worked super hard on this record, and our fans were in our corner," Smyers says. "It just felt really cool to be acknowledged by our peers, by our community."
