Slim Whitman, country icon of the early years, has died from heart failure. He was 90. Known for his thick, signature mustache and tall figure, he was a huge star in the early 1950s. Many of his hits were sung in a high, soprano-style -- almost a yodel. He career was rejuvenated in the 80's when rock stations began to feature him in parody bits. His yodel killed the invading martians in the film, MARS ATTACKS. When you look at the list of country hits in the 50's you'll find a string of Slim Whitman recordings. His 1955 hit, "Rose Marie" stayed on the England (where he was extremely popular) chart at #1 for the longest length of time until Bryan Adams broke the record is 1991.
