‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ Movie is in the Works
‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ was a mildly popular, environmentally-friendly cartoon that ran from 1990 through 1996. And like so many childhood favorites it is being shopped around as a possible new movie franchise. Sony has taken the bait, and are working on turning the cartoon into a feature length film.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Sony is in final negotiations to turn ‘Captain Planet’ into a film that will be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford. This comes nearly two years after the announcement that Cartoon Network was setting up a ‘Captain Planet’ live action movie that never came to pass, so it’s possible this could get stuck in development hell again. Currently it’s unknown if Sony wants to make it live action or go with an animated approach.
For those unfamiliar with the show, it followed five teens from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America who are given powers by the Earth spirit Gaia (originally voiced by Whoopi Goldberg) to stop pollution. When their troubles get too intense the five can summon Captain Planet to their aide. Basically, this is a film that will be labeled liberal propaganda if it ever hits theaters.
And in case you missed it, here’s Don Cheadle‘s audition for the role of Captain Planet:
