The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Infinity War is shrouded in mystery; we don’t even know the title of Avengers 4, and they’ve already shot that movie. We do know that in the gap between Avengers 3 and we will see the debut film featuring Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson as the spacefaring hero. That film doesn’t tell us anything about life after Infinity War either; it’s actually a period piece set in the 1990s.

In a new wide-ranging interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel’s Kevin Feige revealed a few tidbits about the film and its nostalgic vibe. It turns out Captain Marvel isn’t just set in the ’90s; it’s a full-blown throwback to ’90s action movies. “We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either,” Feige explained, “so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel. When asked about any specific inspiration from the period, Feige replied:

Well, not necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements Terminator 2. That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street level car chases, and fun stuff like that. That being said, much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would. Like all of our genre inspirations, there are bits and pieces here and there.

Feige also noted that Larson’s Captain Marvel is “the first hero that Nick [Fury] came across,” and that the film is, in part, about Nick Fury’s discovery of the wider universe of superheroes that he describes to Tony Stark in the post-credits scene from the first Iron Man. That marks a pretty big deviation from Marvel canon; comics’ Nick Fury served in World War II with Captain America and the Howling Commandos, and he took an “Infinity Formula” to stay young throughout the 20th century. The MCU seems to be doing away with that element and just making Nick Fury a regular dude with an eyepatch and a ton of spy skills.

Captain Marvel opens on March 8, 2019.
