Yesterday, we heard about the tragic and sudden passing of actor James Gandolfini who played mob boss Tony Soprano in HBO's The Sopranos. The Sopranos was one of my favorite TV shows of all time, right up there with All In The Family. Gandolfini's brilliant portrayal of a monstrous, yet conflicted mobster who could never come to grips with his inner struggles was epic. The thing that drew me into the show for the first time was theme song. The song is Woke Up This Morning by Alabama 3 from a 1997 album featuring Rob Spragg on the lead vocal. Spragg co-wrote the song with Jake Black.

I don't know what it is about that song, but it was the perfect choice for The Sopranos and fits the opening sequence perfectly. It is my favorite TV theme of all time and I think the best ever in terms of setting the tone for each and every episode.

Gandolfini was a great actor and will be missed. The final episode of The Sopranos left the possibility of the show's return wide open, but without Gandolfini, I don't know if a new version of the show is possible. Gandolfini created a character as real and complicated as any, the likes of which, we may never see again. Enjoy the full length theme song below.
