Bat Found In Evansville Tests Positive for Rabies

Evansville health officials want to remind area residents that rabies is still alive and well in the Indiana wildlife population.

In fact, according to a recent press release from the Vanderburgh County Department of Health, a bat recently discovered in the Evansville area tested positive for rabies after being sent to the Indiana State Department of Health for observation.

And while those creepy, winged creatures are essential for helping control the area’s mosquito population, they are infamous for carrying diseases, like rabies, that can be fatal to humans. It is for that very reason that experts strongly advise against residents handling wild animals.

In addition to protecting you and your family, pet owners are encouraged to check with their veterinarian to ensure that all four-legged members of the family are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. Pets without a valid vaccine should be vaccinated immediately.
