There's a box in Boonville that has many youngsters baffled by what it is. The box is found on South 3rd Street right in front of the liquor store. Some might call it an ancient artifact. What you're about to see dates back to the 1900's.

For those Millennials who are unfamiliar with this box, it's called a phone booth. According to historians, this is is where people would go when they are out and about to make a phone call. Callers would slide a quarter in the machine to place a call. This was in a world before cell phones existed. Unfortunately, the box is all that remains of the phone booth. There is no longer a working phone in this location.

I'm told that there are similar phone booths all around the Tri-State. Most of which are not in service anymore. Back in the day, phone booths were so popular, they were a part of many movies like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and a film starring Collin Ferrell titled Phone Booth. Even popular songs from the early 1990's featured a phone booth. A prime example of this would be Travis Tritt's smash hit "Here's A Quarter."

While these phone booths are obsolete nowadays, it is fascinating to see some of these artifacts still around. The next time you are on your cell phone, remember that it wasn't always so easy to make phone calls when you weren't home. Back in the day, people would have to get out of their vehicles, sometimes in the pouring rain, just to pay a quarter to place a phone call in a phone booth. My, how the times have changed!
