ACM Awards Still on Track to Leave Las Vegas

The ACM Awards are synonymous with Las Vegas, but next year the award show is leaving Sin City and heading for a place that’s a little more country. As expected, the ACMs will head to Arlington, Texas and take over the Dallas Cowboys’ home, AT&T Stadium, in 2015. They may not return to the MGM Grand Garden Arena however.

Bob Romeo, the Academy president, says the move to Texas is just a temporary move and he plans to take the ACMs back to Vegas in 2016. He even says he promises to “drive this back to Vegas” (quote via Review Journal) for those in doubt.

Romeo’s hopes are to make the ACMs bigger and better — and more accessible to fans. He’s hoping that by 2016 the new arena near Vegas’ Monte Carlo on Las Vegas Boulevard will be built. It could be the newest home of the country music award show.

The Cowboys’ stadium was also chosen as a venue for George Strait‘s farewell tour finale this year — and sold out in one day. If a country music legend can sell out the stadium, the entire country music genre should have no problem filling the spacious venue.

“People say, ‘That’s a lotta seats,’” Romeo said when the move was first announced in 2012. “But we could have sold 30,000 easily in Las Vegas, so you’re going in half sold-out, and it’s not a big stretch to reach that figure in Dallas. It’s not as if we don’t want Vegas to be involved. There is going to be some integration of Vegas for 2015.”

This year’s award show will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena but that wasn’t the first Vegas home for the country music spectacular. The ACMs took over the Mandalay Bay in 2003 before taking over the MGM Grand. Tune in for the 2014 ACM Awards live from Las Vegas on Sunday, April 6 at 8PM ET on CBS.
