9/11/2001 is a day that everyone remembers vividly.  We often talk about the firefighters, police, and EMS first responders, who were all heroes on that day, but we don't too often speak of the dogs.  Many search and rescue dogs were brought to ground zero to search through the rubble to help find survivors, or recover those who didn't make it. It's been just over a year since Britagne's family said their final goodbyes to their hero who rescued so many on 9/11/2001.

Britagne was a 16 year old golden retriever, and last June, after her health took a turn for the worst, her owner made the hardest decision any pet owner will ever make, the decision to end your pets suffering.  It's the biggest act of compassion we can give our sweet pets.  When walking into the vets office, Britagne was sent off with a salute from officers, and afterwards they draped an American flag over her, and carried her out of the vets office.

She had a heroes send off, just as she deserved.

Today as we remember all of those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001, and all of those whose lives were forever changed on that day, let's take a second to also remember the four-legged heroes who on that day helped find and pull countless people from the rubble.

To all of the first responders, human or canine, you are heroes.  Thank you.
